According to Dr. Simone Burke, ND, these are some of her favourite grab and go snacks when you're needing a healthy midday pick-me-up in a pinch!
Here are our Top 5 Go-To Snacks!
When you’re when in a rush to get out the door or headed on a long road trip trail mix with dried fruits and nuts are a great source of protein and can supply nutrients that people often have trouble fitting into their diet, such as antioxidants, fibre, and healthy fats.
Our Favourite Nut and Fruit Trail Mix Recipe
½ cup unsalted roasted pecan halves
2 cups air-popped unsalted popcorn
½ cup unsalted roasted walnut pieces
1⁄3 cup golden raisins
1⁄3 cup chopped dried apricots
¼ cup good-quality dark chocolate chips
2 Tbsp. unsalted pumpkin seeds
Greek yogurt is another fabulous snack that is high in calcium and protein. Choose an unsweetened variant, add some berries, and you’ve got yourself the perfect nutritious snack!
3Whenever you think of a quick snack your first thought may be an apple - and you’re right! But in order to satisfy those midday cravings try adding some nut butter to the mix (our favourite is almond butter!) This dynamic duo provides both fibre AND protein.
4Pumpkin seeds are - in our opinion - and underrated snack! They have the necessary fatty acids that help boost heart health and are delicious too. They can be eaten on their own, or even mixed into your favourite trail mix.
5We know what you’re thinking… Kale as a CHIP?! Trust us when we say, once you try them you will never go back. A healthy alternative to your classic fried chips, kale chips are light, crispy, and full of nutrients.
