What Treatments do Naturopathic Doctors Use?

Clinical Nutrition - Diet assessment and case-specific recommendations.  Treatment may include nutritional supplements such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes & other nutriceuticals.

Botanical (Herbal) Medicine - Plant substances from around the world used for their nutritional value & healing effects.

Homeopathic Medicine - Minute amounts of natural substances used to stimulate the body's self-healing abilities.

Physical Medicine - Physical treatments used by NDs include a variety of hands-on techniques for the spine, joints and soft tissues & can also include massage, hydrotherapy, and the therapeutic use of heat and cold.

Traditional Chinese Medicine - Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is based on balancing the flow of Chi (energy) through the meridian pathways using therapies that include acupuncture and Chinese herbs.

Lifestyle Counselling - Physical, emotional, nutritional & environmental factors affect overall health.  NDs help in making effective lifestyle choices, through one-on-one lifestyle counselling.

Intravenous (I.V.) Therapy - I.V. therapy delivers vitamins and minerals in concentrations that are not achievable via oral means. I.V. therapy can be an important therapy for those who have chronic digestive concerns or malabsorbtion issues. I.V. drips of high doses of vitamin C (25-50g) are an excellent supportive measure for those undergoing chemotherapy/radiation for the treatment of cancer. Emerging research has shown that intravenous vitamin C actually helps to enhance the effects of chemotherapy while minimizing its side effects.  It can be used between chemotherapy treatments to maximize the process of treating cancer successfully!

I.V Therapy may be beneficial to you if you have:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Migraines, Low Energy, Asthma, Cancer, Crohn's Colitis

Auricular Medicine - This highly sophisticated assessment/treatment technique is a means to assess disease states, and evaluate and establish treatment protocols that are most suited for the individual.  Every gland, organ and tissue has a corresponding acupuncture point on the ear.  Stimulation of these points,(using acupuncture needles, ear seeds or laser) can address different pathological conditions in various parts of the body.  Auricular assessment can be used to determine the underlying cause, assess for allergies and can be used to determine appropriate herbal and nutritional recommendations.  Auricular medicine is a great tool to help with  chronic and complex conditions such as auto-immune, for example. Auricular Medicine can be beneficial for conditions such as MS, lupus, diabetes, hypothyroidism, allergies, infections, disease prevention and complex conditions where nothing seems to work. (Dr. Simone Burke)

Bowen Therapy - The use of thumbs and fingers on precise points to perform a set of rolling-type moves activates nerve bundles below the muscle and soft tissue of the body.  The Bowen experience is subtle, healing and relaxing.  This technique, of stimulating meridian points in a specific order with careful pauses in between, prompts the body to reset, repair and balance itself.  Some things that benefit from Bowen are: better metabolism, stress, anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, sport injuries, ear infections, TMJ issues, allergies, back and sciatic pain, bedwetting, MS, kidney and urinary tract issues, migraine headaches and more.  Most people report 50-80% improvement after 3 treatments and complete success before 10. (Dr. Simone Burke)

Cupping - Cupping is a technique whereby small cups are used as suction devices and placed on the skin.  Once the suction has occurred, the cups can be gently moved across the skin. The suction in the cups causes the skin and superficial muscle layer to be lightly drawn into the cup.  It is much like inverse massage - rather than applying pressure to muscles, it uses gentle pressure to pull them upward.  For most patients this is a relieving sensation, though occasionally the initial sensation can be slightly uncomfortable.  The suction provided by cupping can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow and calm the nervous system (making it an excellent treatment for high blood pressure).  Cupping is used for respiratory conditions, and to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, and even cellulite.  Skin conditions, stomach and bowel problems including IBS, and lymphatic conditions also respond well to this therapy.                            (Dr. Angela Hanlon & Dr. Simone Burke)

Facial Rejuvenation - Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is a safe and effective procedure to help reduce or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles, sagging skin, and bags under the eyes.  It is a safe non-surgical approach to reducing the signs of aging while promoting rejuvenation and revitalization of the skin.  Some benefits include firmer facial muscles, tighter pores, brighter eyes, glowing skin and reduction of fine lines. The procedure involves insertion of hair-thin needles into particular areas of the face, ears, neck, hands and legs.  This serves to manipulate the movement of energy in the body according to each person’s individual needs, simultaneously treating the underlying factors that contribute to the aging process. (Dr. Simone Burke)

Blood Tests - Fasting Glucose, Cholestrol Panel, Thyroid Panel, Complete Blood Count, Liver Enzymes, Hormone Profile, etc.

Food Allergy Testing - This test allows for the detection of delayed food sensitivities.  It measures an individual's response to 120 different foods through a blood sample.

Saliva Hormone Testing - Saliva hormone testing is most useful for uncovering hormone imbalances.  It more accurately reflects bioavailable hormone levels.

Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA) - A method of assessing your body composition (including percentage of body fat & metabolic rate).

Urine Dip - Basic urine dip test which gives information on urinary: glucose, specific gravity, blood, protein and leukocytes (white blood cells).
